  1. Tuesday 17 November

Ok so it wasn't an exact science, but I lost count around 96 upstairs in the SouthBank Centre, and a few more turned up after that so I'm officially announcing that the club has made it into triple figures for a single meet! What a difference from 2 years ago (just after the club was formed) where there were around 4 of us getting excited about running with more than one other person! Seems there's a market for a laid back, no-fees running club eh?

    ----------

Talk of a possible club meeting soon (er, can you have multiple AGMs in a year? An EGM? Not too hot on my TLAs sorry...). Anyway, there's a few things that need to be sorted to enable the club to run a little more smoothly so we'll be meeting up and chatting about that soon. Details will probably be sent out via the email list, so if you're not on it and would like to be please email sam (AT) southvillerunningclub.co.uk

    ----------

  2. Tuesday 3rd November 2009

I counted nearly 90 people for tonight's meet - that's an amazing turnout and certainly the best we've had in the 2 years (just over) that the club's been going. New people - welcome! and remember to email in to get yourself put on the mailing list (you're not signing up to anything horrendous, just a few emails now and again regarding any news, the general state of the club etc.) Email address at the bottom of this page (either one is ok).

The move to the SouthBank centre seems to have gone well (couldn't see any free snacks out tonight though, or was it that I was just too slow in getting back?!), the space upstairs is a great place to meet and it's cool that more people are hanging around for a drink after running.

Enough for now, thanks to all the people who led groups tonight, and if you're on Twitter check us out twitter.com/southvillerc (click the 't' at the top left of this page).

  3. Change of meeting place

From Tuesday 6th October we'll be meeting at The SouthBank Centre on Dean lane (just up the road from Bristol South Swimming Pool). Usual time, when you get there make your way up to the dance studio (best way is via the staircase just inside the main glass double doors).

At the top of the stairs we've got some space to put up a noticeboard, and there are plans to try and get some storage there also. Storage is yet to be sorted so until we know for sure and update everyone, it may be a good idea to arrive ready to run.

Any questions feel free to email us/post a question in the forum.

  4. Well done to all you lads and lasses today on the Half. There were some magnificent times today. I won't list them all as the results haven't been published yet ( probably tomorrow - Monday). My thanks go to the people who sorted out the FerryStation and the banners too as it made finishing expeprience so much better.

    See you all Tuesday night.

    Regards

    Chris

  5. Bristol Half / SRC photo / Fell running

We'll be meeting at the Ferry Station before and after the half marathon (Sunday 6th September). They've kindly agreed to us putting up a couple of SRC banners, should be a good environment to drink/eat/relax at after the half marathon.

    ------

I'm now taking orders for prints of the 2009 SRC photo. £5 for a 10"x8" print (http://flickr.com/gp/samjolly/Xc9B5g). Won't be taking orders for long so if you want one let me know soon.

    ------

Fell running - feel like a serious hilly/off road challenge in the wild? Check out Rob's forum post in the General forum section.

  6. From Dave. Regarding Bristol South Swimming Pool Meeting Point and Facilities.

Since Thursdays are now becoming busy I have been asked by the pool management to pass on that there is a problem with lockers and changing on Thursday nights. Unlike Tuesdays, there is public swimming on during our meeting time on Thursdays. So public swimmers need lockers. Part of the time slot is Ladies Only. For both of these reasons it isn't appropriate for our members to use the poolside for changing, nor use the lockers. Pool Management apologise for this and point out that we only used to meet on Tuesdays. Please can you bear this in mind if you usually use lockers and/or changing.

IMPORTANT: I have also been advised that the pool will be closing for between 6 weeks and 3 months at some point towards the end of the year for refurbishment. Probably when it's really cold and rainy and we need it the most. Maybe during that time we can use The Southbank Centre for our meeting point. Let's see.

  7. Club social (and raffle!)

Friday 21st August - meet in The Spotted Cow on North street (we should have an area reserved from 7.30pm). The raffle will happen before 9pm (updated prize list on the homepage).

Other news: Cheers to Lee Pullen for an excellent new club photo (as seen on the homepage). Lee's Flickr photostream is here: Lee Pullen on Flickr

  8. Club photoshoot on!

Tuesday 11th August: All meet at Bristol South Swimming Pool as usual, leave at 6.30pm and head to Create Centre. We'll all regroup there and have a few photos taken. It's been just under 2 years since Dave set the club up and from beginnings of a handful of runners on a good night, we're now up to around 160 members on the email list, with 50-80 regularly running with the club on Tuesdays. Time, therefore, for a club photo...

All welcome, whether you're new to the club or not. And if you have a green SRC shirt/vest please wear it!

  9. Team photo and social/fundraising raffle

Team photo on Tuesday 11th August (turn up for running as usual), club social/raffle will be on Friday 21st August at The Spotted Cow, North street.

  10. Tuesday 28 July 2009

Record! 70-80 runners tonight, nice to see more new faces join the club - welcome!

For those of you new to the club, please consider joining the email list in order to get the latest on what's happening with SRC. Or if you prefer randomness, I've started "twittering", or is it "tweeting" at twitter.com/southvillerc - complete waste of time it is, great.

  11. We're now on twitter!

No idea why. Follow SouthvilleRC here:

    http://twitter.com/southvillerc

  12. Well what a great evening we had on thurs with the 10 k . And the fact we came 4th just shows how we have grown as a club . The social in bar BS3 was a great way of winding down afterwards too. I really hope we can do more of these types of events in the future. A pat on the back to each and everyone of us .

  13. Team Towpath 10k - 24 July 2009

Great event last night (cheers GWR!), thanks to all that came down to support, to club captain Tracey for taking care of all the details, and well done to all who ran. Southville Running Club came 4th - Results here.

Good to see lots at the social afterwards in Bar BS3 and more raffle tickets being sold. We'll be selling raffle tickets for around another couple of weeks and then organise a SRC social one evening to do the raffle.

  14. Buy raffle tickets through PayPal

We've set up a PayPal account for our fundraising needs. If you wish to buy raffle tickets this way, log in to your Paypal account and pay the following email address:

    fundraising (at) southvillerunningclub.co.uk

You can buy tickets in multiples of £5 for 10 tickets. Dave will receive the email notifying him that you have paid (there is a section in which to include a short message if you like) and we'll then put aside your strip(s) of tickets from the book ready for you to collect.

  15. Tuesday 14 July - 75 runners!

Ok so normally when I tell people that the club regularly gets 50 people turning up on a Tuesday, they're really impressed. Tonight I lost count around the 75 mark! Great to see so many club members out tonight, and also great to see another few new faces.

5/6 sub groups ran off at different paces - thanks to all group leaders who led groups this evening.

Raffle news! Our big massive exciting raffle gathers pace with news that Easy Runner has donated a load of stuff - big thanks to them, and to Rob for sorting this out. I'll post full details soon of all the goodies that have been donated. All we need now is to buy some tickets... Zoe?!

  16. Tuesday 7 July

50 odd of us for tonights run - great turn out. Various paced sub groups did their respective routes, with a few of us ending up at the Southbank Centre on Dean Lane for a post run drink (and free bar snacks that were very welcome).

  17. SRC fundraiser

Our new social event guru Zoe has proposed a date of Fri 24 July for our social/raffle. This is the same date as the Team Towpath 10k event, in which Southville Running Club will be represented by a full team, so it'll be a fun evening for us all. Details to follow of exactly what we're doing and where, but keep the date free...

I think Zoe said she's selling raffle tickets now (I'll post a full list of the prizes once sorted) so please contact her/speak to her at a club run and buy loads for yourself/to sell on to people you know. As you all know we charge no fees for the delights of running with SRC, so fundraisers like this are an important means of raising, er... funds...

  18. News!

Few bits and pieces coming up, er, pardon the phrase...

    -----------------------------------------------

Our AGM will be held on Tuesday 30 June, 8pm at the Southbank Centre, Dean Lane. Running as normal on that night.

    -----------------------------------------------

There are a few other options available should you want to put in an order:

    Kids sizes T shirts - £11 each.

    -----------------------------------------------

    Team Tow Path 10k - 24 July 2009

We have a team event on Friday the 24th July (evening). A team 10k in Greville Smythe Park and along the Tow Path and back. There will be several local running club teams entered along with us.

Our team captain for this event is Tracey Horton. We've had about 15 sign up so far, so room for another 15 or so. It's not about speed and times, it is about supporting the event, representing Southville Running Club and having a good laugh, so please let Tracey know if you want to join up. We also need supporters and there will, I presume, be a big social for all teams afterwards, probably in Bar BS3. It should be a great evening.

    -----------------------------------------------

    Moti Bristol

Have been contacted by Run/Fitness/Triathlon shop Moti (details in Local Links section) who have said they would be happy to run a Shoe Fit Lab evening for Southville Running Club where they bring their portable treadmill and give everyone feedback on their gait/shoe fit + injury advice. If this would be of benefit, post something up in the forum or mention it on a club night and I can follow it up.

  19. Thursday 4 June 2009 - social

Don't know details but a social has been planned for after running tonight - at the Tobacco Factory. Zoe was going to send around an email to the group list so keep an eye out for that. Otherwise I expect 8ish would be a good time to turn up...

  20. Hi

Just read in the Pigeon that the Victoria Park Action Group has recently marked out 3 measured routes.1 mile and 2 half mile routes. Well down to them. Hope they repaint them on a regular basiss some are looking a little weathered.

Hopefully other parks/Tow Path can follow suit.

Its a great opportunity for us to do some timed mile sessions in the next few weeks. I will post one for a Tuesday night fairly soon.Possibly AGM night ??

I will try and get the route map and contact the Landscape Design Team who plotted the routes

  21. Update - Thanks from Matthew

Spoke to Matthew today (the mountain biker) and he wanted to pass on his thanks to the club members for their help following his crash in Ashton Court. He says the collarbone break is quite a clean one, so hopefully the healing should be straightforward. Matthew said he'll warn us next time he's off to Ashton Court ;)

  22. The British Heart Foundation have their annual 5k harbourside run on our club night. This is an opportunity to.

    1. Promote SRC

    2. Take part

    3. Have a meeting/get together following the run.It starts at 6pm

Please see the events section of our website for details of the run

    Rob

  23. Thursday 21 May 2009

Just to let runners from this evening's run know, Matthew, the mountain biker who crashed ahead of us (twice) in Ashton Court, suffered a broken collar bone but is otherwise ok. Had a lovely text message from Kate who wanted to pass on her thanks to the group. Get well soon Matthew - hopefully you'll be back on the bike in no time :)

  24. Tuesday 19 May 2009

I didn't count myself, but Dave said he stopped counting at 40 or 50 so another excellent turnout. Thought the warm down drinks at the Southbank Arts Centre worked really well, should do that again as long as the free bar snacks keep appearing...

  25. Tuesday 12 May 2009

Great turnout tonight, must have been at least 50. Big thanks to those that led the various groups. Just to repeat a few things that Dave mentioned this evening:

    - Club running shirts. We'll be doing another order very soon, so if you want one get your order in to Dave asap (email info@southvillerunningclub.co.uk)

    - Next Tuesday's finishing point. We'll be trying something a bit different next Tuesday - finishing our runs at the Southbank Centre on Dean Lane (just up the road from the pool). Those who want to, please remember to bring a warm top and some pennies, the plan is that we can relax post run over a drink before sodding off home.

    - This website. Don't be shy, post something in the forum, anything. It may be a little slow, clunky and rather crap, but it won't bite and we love it.

  26. SRC Social Sunday (10 May)

Things are looking good for the post Bristol 10K social on Sunday. We've got the area outside the front of the Southbank centre in which to set up our own little SRC corner - should look good with the green and white banners & bunting up.

The popular Southbank arts trail is on this weekend, so this should add to the community atmosphere. Plus I saw my friend Moussa earlier today and he should be playing at the Southbank centre on Sunday afternoon.

If you frequent the harbourside area much around lunchtime or after work into the evening, Moussa is the guy who plays the Kora by Pero's bridge. Talented guy, if he's playing on Sunday you should all check him out.

    Moussa's website

    Moussa's MySpace

Good luck to all those who are running in the first of the Towpath series or in the Bristol 10k, see you on Sunday...

  27. I'll be there for both 10K's this weekend, see you beforehand / during / after... and good luck to everyone running!!

  28. Towpath series I believe we may have 13 runners. I plan to get to BS3 @ 6.30pm. See you there

Bristol 10k. I plan to meet at Southbank Centre at 8.30 ish. Hopefully we can get a good turn out for the social.

  29. Hi guys, I came down to you about a month ago but unable to make it since that time until Tuesday 28th April.

Lo and behold I got within 75 yards and met a cordon of Police/Fire Engines near London Inn. By time I got halfway down East Street on diversion it was well past 6.30 so went home. Now I've got the lurgy so not running (Bristol 10k is out).

Am I fated never to run with you again. Not so, I can't do 12th may - but I will be back.

  30. Tuesday 28 April's meet

Worth highlighting that we had around 50 people turn up on Tuesday which is an excellent turnout. Thanks to those that headed each running sub-group.

  31. Bristol 10k/Social event (Sunday 10 May)

Whether you are doing the Bristol 10k or not, how would you like to hang around a pub patio, near the start and finish of the race, have a few beers, socialise with the other club members and present a friendly club to passers-by?

We have been offered the front patio of The Southbank Centre for the day. You have all run past this place many times. It is in Dean Lane. On Sunday the 10th we would occupy the patio shown and we can put up a large banner and green and white bunting. Also, a table or stall with flyers and information for recruitment purposes. The bar will be open and there will be a barbecue in the garden out the back. Beer is cheap and there is even a skittle alley.

The idea, apart from our post-race party/social/get-together in the afternoon would be to try to capture a few new recruits as they go past to the start or on their way home after the finish. At least, let that be the excuse for the social part. As well as, of course, to offer support and cheer to our runners in the 10k and give them somewhere to rehydrate afterwards.

All welcome, members, non-runners, supporters, partners...

    Bristol 10k

    Southbank centre (Google Streetview link)

  32. Free sports massage (Wednesday 22 April)

As mentioned before Tuesday's run, SRC member and professional sports massage therapist Jules Richards has personally hired a space in Bristol South Swimming Pool for next Wednesday evening. Jules is offering SRC members free 20 minute sports massage sessions, or assessments to try and sort out any recurring problems.

There are 5 x 20 minute sessions available, if you are interested then please contact Jules (julespersonaltrainer@live.co.uk | 07794 469376) to book a slot - he'll take some info on what you'd like done so he can get straight on to it come Wednesday evening.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Do you have a specific injury? Aching muscles? Or just a niggling pain that you want sorted? Sports massage isn't just for professional athletes, it can benefit everyone.

Tight muscles don't only come from exercise, the way we stand, sit and move in everyday life can cause shortening and tightening of muscles that can lead to common problems such as backaches and headaches. By stretching out your muscles and removing any trouble spots I'll be able to help you perform better and limit the chance of injury..."

  33. For anyone training for any 10ks. I will be running an Ashton Court 10k on sunday 19/4/09 . I will leave Greville Smyth Park (by Duckmoor Road at 9.30) and meet by the cafe in Ashton Court at 9.45. For those who have not run this route it is a dificult first 4K followed by a flat circuit of the upper part of Ashton Court and a great downhill.

The pace will be 8-8.5 Minute mile

  34. Stretching

SRC member and Sports/Massage Therapist Jules Richards has created a stretching pack for all fellow club members. I'm a recent convert to stretching - always been too lazy to do much more than a token effort, but having moaned at Jules about my niggling injuries I got some stretching tips that really sorted things out.

Thanks to Jules for putting this pack together for all of us to benefit from.

Go to the About Us page and click on the 'SRC Stretching Pack' link at the bottom.

  35. Thursday's run

    Back to normal :)

  36. Thursday's run

Run to Wookey Hole caves and back (dinner provided by Wookey Hole caves), 22 miles approx in each direction.

  37. Hi, After running with another club for years decided to try this one out on Thursday, it was great and reaaly freindly. Went to social at Hen & Chicken last night but didn't recognise any faces from the club, oh well maybe next month. Anyway will definately be back on Tuesday, thanks.

  38. 20+26+32

SRC club member Stuart is doing the Gloucester 20, Stratford Marathon and the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon (hills!) over the coming months and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process.

All the best Stuart, enjoy yourself if that's possible ;)

Read more at Stuart's Justgiving page

  39. Tuesday 27 January

53 of us tonight, great turnout and a SRC record? The majority headed to Queen square for interval training - thanks to Tom for organising it, was good to mix things up with something like this. Other groups included Steve's easy going social run around the harbourside and Dave's hillier route.

New members - we've had quite a few join of late which is great to see, and if you're reading just to remind you that if you want to be on the mailing list please email info@southvillerunningclub.co.uk Thoughts on any aspect of the club welcomed.

Remember, social at The Spotted Cow this Friday at 7.30pm.

  40. Monthly social event

Last friday of the month = SRC social.

We're kicking it off at The Spotted Cow, North street (www.thespottedcowbristol.com/find.html), Friday 30 January, 7:30pm. No running, unless it's to the bar.

  41. Circuit training in Victoria Park Sat mornings at 08:30. Friendly and a good way to start the weeekend, if anyone is interested. Emma

  42. Thursday run times (from 8th January)

Thursday runs will now mirror the Tuesday runs - meet at 6:15pm at Bristol South Swimming Pool for a 6:30pm start. This earlier time seems to be the preference of the majority of the group, however if there are a few of you who would still prefer to run at a later time why not try posting a message in the forum to organise your own run?

It's coming together, with Rob having posted details of a 10k Ashton Court run this coming Sunday 11th Jan that's proving popular, so if you feel like running at 5am on a Monday morning then post it up on the forum and hook up with other club nutcase...I mean members.

  43. Run - Tuesday 30 December

Just to warn people that the swimming pool is apparently closing at 6pm again, so no use of lockers/warm foyer space to wait in.

  44. Hi all, in preparation for all those New Years resolutions that include something along the lines of "get fit", "go running" etc. I've put a link to the latest SRC poster on the About Us page.

Feel free to download the pdf, and stick a few printouts up on work notice boards/local shop windows etc.

  45. Christmas Do

This is taking place on Tuesday 2nd December at Cafe Sazz on North St. Its £12.50 each for the buffet and we have the whole place to ourselves. Please can you let us know if you're coming by paying (cash or cheque made out to Cafe Sazz) by Tuesday 25th. Either give it to Dave or me (emma) at running on Tuesday or Thursday or drop it in to Fanatic Scooters, 56 North St. Supporters/partners/injured or lapsed welcome of course.

  46. Great turnout for the run last night - 40+ runners, and 30 odd taking over half of the Hen & Chicken for the social meet afterwards. A Christmas social event is in the pipeline - the organisation of this will be done through the mailing list (to join email info@southvillerunningclub.co.uk).

Thursday nights have a new trial meeting time - meet at 6.45pm at Bristol South Swimming Pool for a 7pm start. Tuesday nights remain unchanged.

  47. i had excellent service in there too. would recomend to everyone.

  48. My Moti

Just had a video gait analysis done at My Moti (Whiteladies rd), and they identified an over-pronation on my right foot. It's a great thing - firstly I ran on the treadmill in my usual trainers, and then we analysed the video (it records you running from behind), playing it back in slow-mo.

The guy then had me run in a couple of different pairs of trainers and upon watching the video, they had stopped the over-pronation with my right ankle no longer visibly rocking inwards. Bought the new trainers and hopefully this will cure my injury and have me back running regularly with the club.

    Great service, really helpful. www.mymoti.com

  49. The old Blog/News app stopped working for some reason (hence the lack of posts over the past few months). I guess we can't complain too loudly considering this is a free website, but for now I've put the Guestbook app in place which will enable us to post news entries... well, until this breaks that is...
