It kind of assumes that new runners would know their 10k / half marathon time rather than their pace, but simply some won't know either. There's nothing stopping us from mentioning 10k/half times as well but given that we've been using min/mile pace all this time, plus the fact that it's quite easy for someone to go and run a 1 mile stretch and figure out different paces, I think we should stick to mentioning min/mile groups first and foremost.

Maybe as a club we need to sort out another session where we do a timed mile route, or suggest to new runners to do this themselves? In any case I think new runners soon figure out what group they should be in after a couple of runs - the important thing is that they start off with an easier group in their mind and work up.

On another note, I think we need more people who are willing to lead a group. With the numbers we're now getting, 5 groups can mean 15-20 people running off together.

1 mile route link

Hi all people who lead groups,

it occurred to me with all these new runners joining us they may get confused about which group to join cos' we use different ways of describing the speed our respective groups run at. When I started running with a club I had no idea what a 7.30 minute mile was etc. May be when we announce what we're going to do with our group that night we could start with a sort of standard "my groups for sub 1.42 half marathon speed/ sub 45 min 10km" or whatever race time etc. - all use the same system so it's clear. Or should we just post it on the website we run 5 groups at these sort of pace so people know before they turn up, what do you all think?

How would everyone who comes out with us like us to do it?

Regards

Chris

Comedian Eddie Izzard has completed his endurance feat of 43 marathons in 51 days for charity Sport Relief, finishing in London's Trafalgar Square.

Izzard, who ran at least 27 miles per day and took just one day off per week, covered about 1,100 miles on his route across the UK.

The 47-year-old, who trained for just five weeks for the event, told BBC News he now planned to "sleep for a week".

In 2006, David Walliams swam the English Channel for Sport Relief.

How did he do it?

Izzard - who ended his mammoth challenge in the pouring rain - said he had been trying to complete his final day's run in under five hours but had failed to do so by 30 seconds.

"I don't know what the hell I was doing at the end but it must have been way faster than I was doing the rest of the time.

"So I feel exhausted now, but you know, it's over."

He added: "Being here is very nice because, when I left here seven-and-a-half weeks ago, there was nothing here, it was just a cold morning and now there's a lot of people here, even in the rain."

The comedian, who has so far raised more than £200,000, was joined by well-wishers for portions of the challenge, which took in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Hi

I have had a few enquiries about this. Can you let me know how many runners would be interested in some runs/training in the Mendips on a saturday or sunday over the Winter. For those of you who did'nt run through last winter ,saturdays and sundays are the only chance to run in the daylight.

I am hoping to persuade the Charterhouse Centre (www.charterhousecentre.org.uk) to allow us to use their parking facilities and outside toilets.

If you do not know Charterhouse it is next To Beacon Batch (the highest point in the Mendips ??) and certainly a good work out.

I would be looking to run for anything between 1 and 2.5 hours ?? Please note although I am trying to organise it does not mean it will be my pace.

We will leave Bristol about 9 am and run from 9.45 to approx mid day and hoping finish at a pub.

Please indicate on this site if you are interested and prefence of saturday or sunday. We need to think about vehicle(s ) if there is sufficient interest.

Rob

I just wanted to say, if any one is still aching after the Bristol Half, I really reccommend a sports massage with Jules. I won one with him in the running club raffle and had my massage, post half, today. It was a brilliant massage and I almost feel human again! So thanks for offering up a brilliant prize Jules and holding the raffle guys, brilliant idea.

You can find races mentioned on the website mentioned. They are under the heading South Wales Winter Series.

These are short runs on saturday afternoons. It certainly NOT about fast running this is "running" in big hill country.

I would recommend the Kymin as a good introduction. If you do not know Monmouth is an attractive market town on the English/Welsh border (45 mins fom Bristol). For purists its not really fell running.

Hi Sam

I purchased a calender for the year. Another possibility is the Brent Knoll run which I have posted in the events section. If you do not know Bent Knoll it is the large hill next to M5 near Burnham on Sea

Rob

I am a member of Welsh Back gym (on Welsh Back! near Queen's Square). The gym will be opening at 8am on Sunday morning for the Bristol Half and non-members will be able to use the facilities for £3.00. You can store your bag in the lockers, use the gym and the showers and most important of all, have access to the toilets!! They will also be offering post run massages, £5.00 for 15 minutes. Web address is: http://www.welshback.co.uk/

Hi

I have had a few enquiries about this. Initially I thought about arranging some Fell Running type sessions in Bristol within running distance of the club. The possibilties are :

1. Nightingale Valley (up and down) . Leigh Woods if you don't know

2. Troopers Hill (east Bristol). Long fairly boring run to get there.

3. Dundry Slopes (south Bristol). Long run to get there.

4. Some off piste sections of Ashton Court . Up through Deer Park and up near Zig zag path.

If there is interest I would like to consider some visits to the Mendips (Sat or Sun). Does anyone know some good hilly off road circular routes)

I am considering running some Welsh Fell Races (Fan Fawl 3/10/09 2 miles 1000ft) and Sugar Loaf 31/10/09 5 miles 1455 ft, The Blorenge 28/11/09 2.5 miles 1400 ft)

See wfra.org.uk for details.

These are possibilities . Please note poor weather means navigation skills so it may be best to start with some training runs ??

Rob

Hi

I have mentioned to a few people about starting Fell running/ trail running. If anyone is interested please let me know as I am planning to run some fell runs over the next year.

These runs will often be in Wales or the Mendips. Check out www.wfra.org.uk which is the Welsh fell Runners Association. These runs start at 2 miles so its not all about distance although the hills are serious hills. I ran the Kymin Dash in July and found it a totally different challenge to road hill running. I actually got found out by starting far too quickly and totally suffered on the off road sections.

if you are interested slow or fast let me know. Its not about the pace its about getting out in the wilds of the Brecon Beacons and the like

if you like Nightingale Valley type of terrain but fancy a longer challenge let me know

Rob

Calling all shift workers! Is there anyone else out there who gets up at silly O clock and is struggling with running?

I'm currently getting up in the middle of the night (3.45am) to start work every day and not surprisingly I'm really struggling with fatigue levels.

I however, still want to run, but have identified that running after 6pm is no good for me, as the adrenalin is still pumping and I can't sleep.

But more than ever I need the support of a group to encourage me to keep running. It can be hard enough at the best of times to gee yourself up for a run, let alone when your body clock is broken.

I wondered if there were any other shift workers in the club, who might want to run during the day - almost form a 'self help group' as it is such a struggle when you are always tired.

Any takers? Or just anyone who is about in the day, to encourage us poor fatigued runners on. It would be a huge help to me.

Yours, tired of Bedminster. X
